Therapeutic Knitting

I took up knitting when I was in second year nursing school at Lakehead University after seeing the incredible creations my classmates made. It was a great way to get together with friends on the cold winter evenings in Thunder Bay. I was immediately hooked as I found it such a relaxing activity. In 2010, my mother suffered a massive stroke. Her neurologist encouraged her to continue knitting, an activity she had enjoyed all her life prior to her stroke. My mom was delighted to try knitting again. In an effort to assist her, we began knitting scarfs together. These made wonderful gifts for her to give to family members at Christmas time. Knitting is a very therapeutic activity that involves mental and hand dexterity skills. It has been shown to be effective in reducing anxiety and depression, while improving memory and hand co-ordination. It also allows people, such as my mom, to feel proud from creating a piece of clothing. Additionally, it is a great way to relax and enjoy some peaceful time surrounded by family and friends. If you have never tried your hand a knitting, I encourage you to pick up some needles and wool and give it a try. I think you will be impressed at how calming it will make you feel.
